Following the sad demise in early 2022 of 15-year-old local retro bar Redgold1, two Thai brothers – one gay, one straight – radically reinvented the bite-size space previously defined by 1970s and 80s 7" picture sleeves on its walls (with matching playlist). Opened in July 2022, Gem introduced cocktails and more than a touch of gloss and glitz to the leg of the Fuggerstraße west of the Martin-Luther-Straße, normally the domain of beer and all things conventionally manly. Here the self-declared theme is 'luxury', marked by marble flooring, a chandelier and festooned gold curtains. Karaoke on Tuesdays. During the Folsom street fair in September 2022, use of the toilet cost €1, even for paying/drinking customers.
